Run in partnership with Creative Scotland, Drygate Brewing, Help Musicians, Musicians’ Union and more, the ceremony was hosted by radio presenter and DJ Jim Gellatly alongside spoken word artist and theatre maker Leyla Josephine. The virtual event also included performances by Glasgow quintet Walt Disco and 2020 SAY Award winner Nova.

The biggest winner of the night was TAAHLIAH, who became the first black trans artist to be nominated for a SAMA, as well as the first artist to ever be nominated and win in two different categories in the same year.

Edinburgh singer-songwriter Callum Easter – whose stunning debut album Here or Nowhere was also shortlisted for the 2020 SAY Award – took home the Best Live Act award at the SAMAs.

Other winners included folk singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jenny Sturgeon (Best Acoustic), Dundonian rapper India Rose (Best Hip Hop), ‘Caledonian metal’ band Saor (Best Metal) and Glasgow art funk six-piece Fauves (Best Rock/Alternative).

The 2020 SAMA winners were determined following a three-day public ballot which received over 10,000 votes.
